Direct and supervise mechanics and technicians in
the installation, alternation, overhaul, maintenance, and
repair of electrical and mechanical equipment and instruments
of an electric power plant or station

Salary Range US: $50,000 to $90,000 or more

Prerequisites:
Education or Training—Bachelor of Science degree in
electrical engineering or mechanical engineering
Experience—Between five and 10 years of power plant
experience, preferably in maintenance of electrical and
instrument control (E&IC) systems; two to five years’
supervisory experience helpful
Special Skills and Personality Traits—Ability to read
and interpret wiring and schematic diagrams; effective
communication and organizational skills; excellent
computer capabilities; familiarity with performance
equipment testing and analyzing data; good leadership
abilities; knowledgeable of labor bargaining procedures
and union contracts; possess a valid driver’s license with
an acceptable driving record
Special Requirements—Certification as a professional
engineer helpful; other certifications may be required
Tips for Entry :
1. While obtaining your engineering degree, take courses
in psychology and business administration and management
to understand how to control and supervise
people and to understand the budgetary process.
2. During college, search out summer jobs or internship
programs to work in manufacturing plant environments
to gain experience working with tools and
equipment.
3. Take technical writing courses and speech courses, as
your communication skills will be critical as you add
on supervisory duties.
