Job and Salary of Geoscience Technician

Duty:
Assist mining engineers and geophysicists in determining
depth, range, and accessibility of coal deposits

Alternate Title(s):Geological Technician; Geophysical
Prospecting Surveyor; Geophysical Technician; GIS
Specialist; GIS/CADD Mapping Specialist; Surveying
Technician

Salary Range US: $25,000 to $60,000 or more
Salary Range Indo: -

Prerequisites:
Education or Training—Bachelor of Science degree in
computer science, earth science, geography, geology, or
related field; in some cases, associate’s degree in one of
these or a related field may suffice
Experience—Two to four years’ experience in geographic
and geologic field surveying utilizing Global Positioning
Systems (GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS)
technologies
Special Skills and Personality Traits—Capable of
complex analytical thinking, including spatial visualization;
excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
mechanical aptitude with good attention to detail; solid
background in basic chemistry, physics, and mathematics;
strong computer skills, especially in computer
modeling

Tips for Entry :
1. As computer skills are essential, take advanced
courses in such subjects as computer modeling, data
analysis and integration, digital mapping, and geographic
information systems.
2. Investigate summer internships for geographic or geologic
programs to gain practical field experience.
3. Alternatively, investigate summer openings in laboratories,
as some employers prefer such a background in
the science technicians they hire.
