Implement and coordinate coal mine safety programs,
and ensure proper working conditions for mineworkers
in compliance with state and federal regulations

Salary Range US: $39,000 to $95,000 or more

Prerequisites:
Education or Training—Bachelor’s degree in mining
engineering or a related engineering field is a basic
requirement; master’s degree in specialized engineering
field, such as environmental or geological, is recommended;
specialized instruction in mine safety and rescue
procedures also advisable
Experience—Three to five years or more in mine planning
and development, as well as fieldwork in an assortment
of mining environments
Special Skills and Personality Traits—Ability to visualize
three-dimensional objects from two-dimensional
drawings; aptitude for mathematics and science (especially
chemistry and physics); excellent communication
(both oral and written) and interpersonal skills; good
instructional, investigative, leadership, and supervisory
capabilities
Special Requirements—Certification as a Professional
Engineer (PEng) is a requirement
Tips for Entry :
1. During high school, gain a solid background in mathematics
(algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus)
and science (biology, chemistry, and physics), as
they are basic requirements for admission into most
engineering schools.
2. Include some additional course work in English (for
your writing communication skills), and sociology or
psychology (to understand interpersonal relations and
to learn how to teach and lead people).
3. Consider taking basic health and safety courses at a
local Red Cross organization or a hospital.
