Prerequisites:
Education or Training—High school degree required;
apprenticeship program completion required
Experience—Completion of apprenticeship program,
usually consisting of four to five years of on-the-job
training along with classroom instruction; experience
working in power plants, refineries, or industrial plants;
some background with mechanical drawing and blueprint
reading helpful
Special Skills and Personality Traits—Communication
skills, both verbal and written; dependability and attention
to detail; math proficiency; good manual dexterity
and mechanical abilities; physically strong with good
eyesight; reliable time-management and problem-solving
talents
Special Requirements—Professional licensing certification
required; union membership recommended; nuclear
power plant security clearance usually necessary
Tips for Entry :
1. During high school, consider summer apprenticeship
programs in the building or plumbing trades to gain
practical experience in preparation for your apprenticeship
studies after graduation.
2. Take writing courses along with your English and
computer courses, as you will need to keep records of
all your work done as a Pipe Fitter.
3. As many plumbers and Pipe Fitters eventually become
self-employed and have to prepare cost estimates for
their clients (as well as manage their business), you
may find it useful to take accounting and business
management courses while in high school.
