Control the flow of electricity through transmission
lines to industrial plants and substations that, in turn,
supply residential and commercial electricity through
distribution lines

Prerequisites:
Education or Training—High school degree minimum
requirement; in many cases, college-level courses and,
possibly, a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree are also
required for applicants to be competitive
Experience—Prior background in a technical job, preferably
with electronic equipment, a necessity, as well as
computer proficiency; years of training and experience as
an apprentice required before becoming a fully qualified

Special Skills and Personality Traits—Capable of
accepting responsibility and making appropriate decisions;
excellent manual and finger dexterity; good
knowledge of mathematics and excellent computer skills;
outstanding mechanical abilities, with a thorough knowledge
of electric and electronic equipment; patience and
persistence, with close attention to detail; sensitivity to
potential problems and excellent use of deductive reasoning
in solving them
Special Requirements—Certification as a systems operator
is usually required
Tips for Entry :
1. In school, develop your mathematics skills (including
algebra, calculus, and geometry) and become computer
literate.
2. Seek an apprentice position (or a summer job) in a
tool shop, preferably one dealing with electronic or
electrical equipment, so you become familiar with
them, their uses, repair, and maintenance.
3. Practice inspecting electronic and electrical equipment
to identify the cause of errors or defects, and
use your hands and arms in handling, installing,
positioning, and moving materials and manipulating
objects, as these are abilities that will be useful for
you in this job.
